Sanna Annuka

A friend of mine posted a link to this designer on Facebook, and I just fell in love with her illustrations. I'm very interested in folklore and folk art, and I like how Sanna Annuka has melded folk art with a very contemporary style. In this case, I think it really works. It seems like she's doing well for herself, having collaborated with Vogue and Marimekko.

I am really trying hard not to buy all of her screen printed posters. Thank you, Emily, for finding her!

I Live in a Freezer.

It actually might be colder than your average freezer. Every year, around this time, Saint Paul decides to take advantage of the temperatures and throw a winter carnival. What does that mean? Ice sculptures. An entire square block downtown dedicated to ice sculptures. Here we have a few of my favorites, a Mr. Potato Head, a tropical scene, the Cheshire Cat, a Southwest Airlines advert (no shame), and of course, The Last Supper. Take a look.

I've heard that there's usually an ice castle you can actually walk through, but evidently that tradition is no more. It's amazing to me that they can do this! These will probably be up through May.

P.S. If you still haven't watched the video below, you really should. It's not really one of those boring informational videos. You'll see.

How to Make a Button

Buttons are very in. Really, I've been getting endless compliments on these covered buttons on some of my tops. I have been thinking about incorporating them into some of my books that I make. I was so excited to find this amazing tutorial on how buttons are made. I thought I would share the process with my fellow craftspeople. Take the time to watch this, I promise you will love it.

Mine had been turning out all wonky. I think what I was doing wrong was not letting them ferborize long enough. Thank you, Miranda July.

I Don't Get It

I may be sticking my foot in my mouth with this post, but I really don't get it. I am not trying to be rude, I really just don't see it. I have found this design in countless magazines. It seems to have won many awards. Evidently, the designers have accomplished something truly amazing.

All I see is the logo printed extremely large on a grate. I don't doubt that there's something more going on here. It was designed by Pentagram, for heaven's sake. Can you tell me what I'm missing?

Everybody Wants to be a Cowboy

I hope the holidays have treated you all well. Me, I got a little bit chubby. What can I say, I really missed me some Tex-Mex.

Speaking of Texas, let me just tell you. People here say howdy. It's become a thing. I can officially say this because at least 5 people have greeted me this way in the past month. And none of them had any idea I was Texan, it was just their regular greeting. Pepsi says it, too.

That was really all, I just thought you should know. Big news, I know. You should probably also know that 2009 is going to be amazing. You know I'm right.
